Guangzhou is the capital and most populous city of the province of Guangdong in southern China. On invitation from the Guangzhou Institute of Forestry and Landscape Architecture, I delivered a keynote on the European trends in urban forestry and the use of emerging technologies to better manage these ecosystems. Guangzhou itself has forested 42% of its urban land, which means it offers a staggering 16.5 m2 of green space per resident—despite its 20+ million population. Amongst others, we visited Haizhu Wetland Park, the largest urban wetland among China's super metropolises with an area of 1,100 hectares, about 3 times larger than New York's Central Park.
